The purpose of the alcohol and drug testing regulations in Part 382 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) is to prevent accidents and injuries due to misuse of alcohol and/or drugs. Though most drivers are safe, professional, and comply with the regulations, it is important for driver supervisors understand how to recognize and approach a driver that could be impaired. This required supervisory training under Section 382.307, provides knowledge to a supervisor regarding whether reasonable suspicion exists, and the driver should undergo testing. Upon completion of this course, the supervisor will better understand and have confidence in their reasonable suspicion responsibilities as it pertains to a driver’s alcohol and drug use and misuse.
