Hands-On-Rate Study Workshop, Including Asset Management

Your water or sewer rates should be based on the true cost of operating “Your” system. In this class we can help you find the true cost and establish adequate rates.

In this workshop we will take you through the rate making process from A-Z.  We follow the standardized format encouraged by the MDEQ of establishing fixed cost to develop a “ready to serve charge” and variable cost to determine the “cost per unit of water or sewage.”  We will help you develop a Capital Improvement Plan, and an Equipment Replacement Account.  We walk you through the rate making process using MRWA’s Microsoft Excel Based “Rate Making Program”, teaching and coaching you on the development of accurate water or sewage rates to meet the needs of your system.
We will also cover the new water system asset management rule requirements and help you develop an asset management program that follows the MDEQ guidelines.

Here is how the class works.
Prior to class we provide you a list of information you will bring with you to the class
We teach you the fundamentals of rate making and asset management.
We teach you how to use MRWA’s rate making program.
Using your own lap top or one of the provided computers you will enter your data into our Microsoft Excel based rate making program.
Depending on your rate structure and the accuracy of the data you bring with you, it is possible to go home with a completed rate evaluation.
Most importantly we will teach you how to educate your council members on the rate making process and the importance of maintaining and updating your water rates
