October 8, 2020

Cybersecurity threats are real and they are here to stay. For example, in Riviera Beach, FL, a city employee opened an email that infected the city’s systems, including those that controlled their water utility pumps. So what can be done about this threat?
To help answer that question, the U.S. EPA is sponsoring a free, 3/4-day workshop with a response exercise to inform water utilities about the cyber threat, ways to manage the threat, and tools (such as AWWA’s cybersecurity tool) available to help utilities. In addition, current results from several Virginia waterworks cyber assessments will be presented to share lessons learned.

In the afternoon, a facilitated response exercise will be conducted presenting realistic cyber threat scenarios, allowing all participants to talk through the actions they would take in response to the threats. The goal is to identify general planning or procedural actions that enhance cybersecurity and mitigate risk.

This virtual workshop is intended for utility information technology staff and utility managers. For questions regarding registration, please call the MRWA office at 517-657-2601 or visit
